CARE Scottish 3 Peaks Challenge

scottish3peaks_supporters.jpgTackle 3 mountains in key historical locations in Scotland, each steeped in the country’s bloody past of civil war and conflict, and raise funds to support CARE’s work in modern day conflicts.  To read the 2009 post event report click here >>

events_table_3pks_scotland_amended.jpgThe first mountain is Ben Tee, (901m), the site of the 1544 Battle of Kinloch-lochy, or ‘Battle of the Shirts’. This battle saw the 300-strong Clan of Fraser and 800-strong clan of McDonald come to blows over who would take over the Chiefship of Clan McDonald of Clan Ranald. A stalemate was eventually reached, after the deaths of all but three Frasers and five MacDonalds. scotland_3_peaks180x135.jpg

The second mountain, Ben Ledi (879m) looks out over the site of the Battle of Callander. In 1645, during the Civil War, this skirmish took place when 700 Royalists under the Laird of Inchbraikie defeated 1,200 Campbells under Campbell of Ardkinglas. This mountain will be tackled at night, giving participants the opportunity to view the beautiful Scottish highlands by moonlight.

Scottish ChallengeThe final mountain, Ben Cruachan (1126m) overlooks the battlefield where, in 1308, King Robert the Bruce faced the MacDougalls of Lorn, a clan allied with the English crown. The Bruce defeated the MacDougalls and was then able to turn his attention to the English- a truly amazing chapter in Scotland’s story.

Hike through history, and at the same time, learn about and support CARE’s life-changing work in modern day conflict zones.

Georgia ConflictFighting poverty in a war zone is a complex task. Conflict undermines long-term development programmes, ignites emergencies and destroys basic infrastructure, like roads and water pipes. CARE works to make projects ‘conflict sensitive’, which means training and helping our staff and partners to avoid unintentionally contributing to conflict and to build peace where possible. We work to bring people together to start, and support, peace-building projects. Your £5000 could enable CARE to deploy a legal and health expert to a remote, conflict-affected part of Uganda for half a year to help women exposed to sexual and gender-based violence.

The Scottish 3 Peaks Challenge will tackle the theme of conflict from a historical and contemporary perspective as you will also be challenged to complete mystery tasks along the way. Three stunning mountains, 24 hours from start to finish- with a truly thought-provoking twist!

Challenge Yourself. Challenge Poverty.
