Swinley Forest plays host to 2007 CARE Adventure Race

Places are filling fast for this year?s CARE Adventure Race in Berkshire?s Swinley Forest, Bracknell, scheduled for Saturday 31st March. Run by leading overseas development agency CARE International?s in-house Challenge Team, the event is part of their corporate fundraising events series, now in its thirteenth year.

Already, ten teams of up to five participants have signed up to this one-day 5 hour race, which challenges participants with walking, orienteering and cycling their way around the forest. They will have 5 hours to visit as many points (controls) as possible; some can only be collected by mountain bike, others by foot. Teams will also have to complete several mental challenges during the Race. While there is no set fundraising element to this event, any proceeds will be donated to CARE International?s overseas development work.

Companies on board so far include Bracknell-based LSI Logic Ltd, who are entering a team of four, returnees Sussex-based Venture Finance, plus world Design and Trade, and Waterstons ? both of whom completed other fundraising events for CARE in 2006.
LSI team member Iain Jackson explained why they decided to enter: ?Adventure Racing offers a really fun way to connect with the outdoors. Aside from running and cycling, strategy and navigation are also key to success, and thinking straight after five hours of strenuous physical activity can be tough. We also view this as an opportunity for different departments within LSI to build better relationships and have fun together, while raising funds for a very worthwhile cause.?

CARE Challenge Event Manager, Neil Munro, added: ?The CARE Adventure Race offers a day of outdoor activity and would be an ideal taster event for people thinking of entering one of our other mountain-based challenges, or for anyone wanting to continue their fitness training.?

Last year?s CARE Challenge Series raised an unprecedented ?1m in support of CARE?s overseas development work, and it is anticipated that the 2007 fundraising total will well exceed this. Funds raised will go to wherever the need is greatest, but CARE tries to ensure that that its emergency responses are linked with long-term development goals.

  1. About CARE
CARE is one of the world?s largest overseas development agencies, working in 70 countries to fight poverty and helping more than 48 million people every year. Our long-term programmes tackle the deep-seated causes of poverty and we are always among the first to respond when disaster strikes. We remain with communities to help them rebuild their lives long after the cameras have gone. CARE is working to put an end to the causes of hunger and poverty that keep 120 million people in sub-Saharan Africa permanently living on the edge of emergency. Our Living on the Edge campaign is calling on the international community for a dramatic overhaul of the system which is keeping people trapped, and to give higher priority to recovery and prevention programmes, like seed distribution and improved veterinary services, so that families can pull themselves back from the edge and be in a stronger position to fight off the next emergency themselves.
  2. The Challenge Team at CARE have been running mountain-based Challenge events for 13 years.  Companies that took part in the 2006 Challenge Events Series included Balfour Beatty, Sir Robert McAlpine, Deloitte & Touche, Ernst & Young, Barclays, Starbucks, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Hugo Boss, Legal & General, Accenture, Vodafone, UBS, Debenhams.
