Swinley Forest Hosts CARE Challenge

Swinley Forest played host to a demanding charity challenge on Saturday 4th April, with the CARE Adventure Race 2009. The all-day event, combining cycling, running and orienteering, raised over £2000 for Care International’s work helping 55 million people in 70 countries find routes out of poverty.

The Adventure Race saw 23 teams of 2-4 people testing their physical and mental agility over five hours on foot and bike, the object of which was to gain orienteering points from around the forest using grid references. Careful route choice and teamwork were essential for success, with bonus points gained for completing challenging puzzles.
The CARE Adventure race was the first in a series of outdoor fundraising events organised and run by the CARE Challenge Team. In 2008, a total of 151 teams across 12 events raised over £1m for CARE, and the Team hope to top this figure in 2009. Says Challenge Events manager Neil Munro, “The CARE Adventure race in Swinley Forest has kick-started our Challenge season brilliantly. It was a great taster session for some teams who will participate in our 3 Peaks or other mountain events, and a fantastic team-builder in its own right for all the other teams.”
The overall winning team were from Syngenta-  Stuart Watson, Simon Perry and Mark Greener. Their local knowledge and good navigation skills enabled them to collect the full 600 points through a combination of physical and mental challenges- with time for a beer to spare!
The event was thoroughly enjoyable and a huge fundraising success. The CARE Challenge Team would like to thank all participating teams for their support for CARE International- with special thanks to Syngenta for entering four teams, and Sainsbury’s who entered three.
There are many other fundraising events included in the CARE Challenge Series in aid of CARE International, from mountain challenges to cycling, canoeing and multi-activity events, as well as a variety of bespoke teambuilding events available to businesses- all of which take place in some of the most beautiful areas of the UK, France and Spain.
