24 Peak Challenge

Leading overseas development agency CARE International UK have laid down the gauntlet for intrepid individuals from the City- in the shape of the CARE 24 Peaks Challenge supported by Lexicon Partners.

This event, aimed at raising much-needed funds to support CARE’s overseas projects, will see adventurous participants scaling 24 mountain peaks in as many hours! Teams will take in the most stunning scenery of the Lake District National Park, and conquer classic peaks such as Helvellyn, Great Dodd and Scafell Pike along the way.
The CARE 24 Peaks Challenge is part of the 2008 CARE Challenge Series, through which the organisation aims to raise well over £1m for the charity’s essential work overseas, helping 55 million people in over 60 countries find routes out of poverty.

The CARE 24 Peaks Challenge is one of the toughest events in the CARE Challenge Series, and teams are supported every step of the way from signup to completion, with on-hand training and fundraising support from the Challenge Team.  Says Challenge Manager Michele Evans, “We have over 13 years’ experience of organising outdoor fundraising events, so participants are in the best possible hands. This ranges from help with fundraising and advice on training to safety on the mountainside and a great party at the end of each event. And with over 90 pence in every pound going to our poverty fighting programmes, teams know that their efforts are more than worthwhile- they’re essential.”

The CARE Challenge Team are also conscientious about protecting the environment throughout the Challenge Series. Says Challenge Event Manager Neil Munro, “We specialise in UK events and minimise our impact on the environment, locally and globally. We have a strict code of conduct, developed alongside the Institute of Fundraising, including limiting participant numbers and using less popular routes to limit the effects of erosion. We donate a percentage of the event profits to maintain footpaths and run litter-picking contests during our Challenges! We limit teams to one vehicle each and offset our carbon emissions. So participants can enter knowing they’re only doing good.”

In 2007, a total of 182 teams across 12 events raised £1.1m for CARE, and the team hope to top this figure in 2008. Places are going fast so the CARE Challenge Team is urging people to sign up!

About CARE
1. CARE is one of the world’s largest aid agencies, working in over 60 countries to fight poverty and helping more than 55 million people every year. Our long-term programmes tackle the deep-seated causes of poverty and we are always among the first to respond when disaster strikes. We remain with communities to help them rebuild their lives long after the cameras have gone. CARE is working to put an end to the causes of hunger and poverty that keep 120 million people in sub-Saharan Africa permanently living on the edge of emergency. Our Living on the Edge campaign is calling on the international community for a dramatic overhaul of the system which is keeping people trapped, and to give higher priority to recovery and prevention programmes, like seed distribution and improved veterinary services so that families can pull themselves back from the edge and be in a stronger position to fight off the next emergency themselves.
