Kaplan 3 Peaks Challenge 2007 post-event report

Kaplan 3 Peaks Challenge 2007

On the weekend of 14?15 July, our CARE Challenge event exclusively for Professional Business Advisors, the Kaplan 3 Peaks Challenge, took place, raising a fantastic ?122,000 for the overseas development work of CARE International.

25 teams of intrepid professionals from all over the UK got fully kitted up in readiness for the huge challenge ahead of them: to conquer the UK?s 3 highest peaks ? Ben Nevis (1344m), Scafell Pike (978m) and Snowdon (1085m).

Conditions were changeable from the start of the challenge at Ben Nevis Visitor Centre on Saturday afternoon; sunny spells were interrupted by heavy showers as teams packed full kit in order to be ready for anything the mountain had in store for them. A special mention must go to CIMA, who kindly provided all teams with goody bags containing extra supplies and saved the day with numerous umbrellas for one of the briefings during a particularly inconvenient and heavy rain shower! After being fully briefed by the CARE Challenge staff and volunteers the teams were on their way, everyone made great time and all teams had completed their first peak by 10.15pm.

Support crews then embarked on the long drive south to the Lake District, allowing challengers to grab a couple of hours rest before briefings began at Southwaite Services. The teams had a beautiful morning at Scafell Pike base station at dawn on Sunday, and here they began what is traditionally the hardest part of the challenge, with such an early start and the boulder field to negotiate on their way to the summit. There was some cloud cover early on which lifted and most importantly the conditions remained dry throughout. Some teams were blessed with glorious views across the Lakes from the summit.

With 2 peaks under their belts this only left one mountain for the teams to tackle, Snowdon in North Wales. The weather conditions for the final ascent weren?t looking good with a forecast of thundery showers meaning most teams began in full waterproofs. Nevertheless, this didn?t dampen spirits and teams managed roaring cheers over the radios as they reached the summit!

It wasn?t long before the finish line was bustling with support crew, event sponsor FTC Kaplan staff, the CARE Challenge team and volunteers to give all teams a massive cheer over the finish line to receive their medals and FTC Kaplan goody bags. There was great team spirit and high emotion to be seen as congratulations were passed around and teams were provided with the first celebratory drink of the evening.

At the post-event reception teams enjoyed a well-deserved hot dinner, while praise was duly given for outstanding achievements both during and preceding the challenge. FTC Kaplan were the overall top fundraisers with an amazing pledge of ?41,000 and PricewaterhouseCoopers followed them with a pledge of ?22,000. Very soon blisters seemed to be forgotten and teams stretched out their aching muscles on the dance floor with some enjoying the party until 3am! The best thank you from a team to their support crew must have been from Ashurst (team Legal) who serenaded their female driver during the celebrations.

All teams deserve a huge congratulations and thanks for their achievement on this challenge, 9 teams completed all 3 peaks within the 24 hour target time, which is a fantastic result! Ashurst (team Legal) were the fastest team with an amazing time of 19hrs 37mins, closely followed by PWC Team 1 (team Health) in 20hrs 41mins, who were obviously not hindered by the sombreros they wore throughout the event. However, one of the most memorable teams of the weekend must have been the Conchango Caped Crusaders as Team 2 (Asia) saved the day by completing the challenge within the 24 hour target time powered by their capes and superhero underpants!

A massive thanks must also go to event sponsors, FTC Kaplan, for sponsoring this event for the second consecutive year. FTC Kaplan CEO, Peter Houillon said:

?We are very proud that the accountancy and financial sector once again rose to the Challenge in support of such an excellent cause. The huge interest from our own regional offices in taking part in the 2007 Kaplan 3 Peaks Challenge generated great excitement in the company during the build-up to the event, fostering excellent teambuilding ? something which continued throughout the event weekend itself and beyond; I?m delighted that our teams did so well with their fundraising, consequently, the event was a great success for all our colleagues ? and I?m pleased to say that our Head Office team even managed to beat last year?s time by 20 minutes!?

CARE Challenge Fundraising Manager, Michele Evans said:

?We?re delighted with the success of the second Kaplan 3 Peaks Challenge, particularly as education plays such a key role in CARE?s work in tackling global poverty, creating lasting and sustainable solutions to people?s lives. Having supported participating teams every step of the way with their fundraising, we?re pleased that their hard work has paid off, and would like to extend sincere thanks to everyone for taking part.?

The whole CARE Challenge Team looks forward to seeing you back on the mountains next year, in the meantime, please don?t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about CARE or our upcoming CARE Challenge Events.
