COINS 3 Peaks Challenge 2007 post-event report

3 Peaks Challenge beats ?1m mark!

Our first major event of the 2007 season, the 5th COINS 3 Peaks Challenge, took place recently, raising an unprecedented ?345,000 for CARE. This takes the total raised by this annual event for the construction industry to over ?1m since it began in 2003!

Team Highbury Square get in to their stride!
On the weekend of 12-13th May 2007, 46 teams of intrepid professionals, recruited from the UK?s top construction companies, as well as one team from the Republic of Ireland, PJ Hegarty, strapped on their hiking boots and donned Gortex jackets in readiness for the gruelling challenge ahead of them: to scale the UK?s 3 highest peaks - Ben Nevis (1344m), Scafell Pike (978m) and Snowdon (1085m).

It was a murky start facing teams as the event kicked off at Glen Nevis in the Scottish Highlands on Saturday afternoon, with a slow steady drizzle pursuing them throughout their Ben Nevis ascent. Nevertheless, teams all made excellent time, even managing impromptu snowball fights on the summit, and all teams had completed the climb by 10.30pm.

Teams then embarked on the long drive south towards the Lake District in readiness for their early Sunday morning ascent of mountain number two, Scafell Pike. This is traditionally the toughest part of the event, mainly due to the early start and damp conditions navigating the boulder field approaching the summit. Nevertheless, teams were prompt in their briefings for this section of the event, which meant that all teams were able to set off from Seathwaite Farm, and make good time, despite foggy conditions on the approach to Checkpoint 1 at Esk Hause and beyond. What?s more, the rain held off, the sun even put in a brief appearance mid-morning, and walkers were rewarded with intermittent views from the summit looking across the Lake District to Derwent Water.

This left just one mountain, Snowdon in Wales. This is technically the easiest of the three, however, this was not to be the case this year, due to the wet weather conditions hampering proceedings during the afternoon, which slowly developed into torrential rain into the evening. Needless to say, teams were not blessed with views across Wales at the summit on this occasion. Some participating teams however, were rewarded instead with meeting their Directors at the top ? including senior representatives from Osborne, Lovell Partnerships, John Sisk, Haden Young, Weston Homes, Wolseley, Mackley, among others, who were taking part in the Director?s Challenge section of the event.

Team Haden Young finish with a smile!
Despite the soggy monsoon conditions at the Llanberis finish, teams all managed huge smiles as they crossed the finish line ? perhaps in contemplation of a hot meal and a much-deserved beer or two! Teams did extremely well on this toughest leg of the event ? with the last team finishing at 9.40pm.

At the post-event reception, with the rain hammering on the marquee roof, teams were praised for their outstanding fundraising, and contribution to a record-breaking event, with a fantastic ?345,000 total raised by the participating teams.
A special mention must surely go to the COINS Ladies Team, for their exceptional achievement and beating their male counterpart team, raising a fantastic ?38,000 ? thereby gaining the top fundraising team award at the reception. They were closely followed by Lovell Partnerships who raised ?33,000 between their two teams, thereby gaining the top fundraising company award; Osborne, whose two teams raised ?22,385; and the Bovis Lend Lease team for their ?16,000 total.

Despite the inclement weather conditions throughout much of the event, 23 out of the participating 46 teams managed to complete the entire Challenge in under 24 hours ? a magnificent achievement! Sovereign Group Team A were the fastest team overall, achieving a remarkable 20 hours 17 minutes. This was followed by Taylor Woodrow Team 2, at 21 hours 5 minutes; and Osborne?s Team 2 hot on their heels, at 21 hours 6 minutes.

Post-event reception speeches were provided by CARE UK?s Head of Corporate Engagement, Tim Bishop, and COINS? Chairman Larry Sullivan ? who said:

?We are extremely pleased with the success of this year?s COINS 3 Peaks Challenge ? a fantastic fundraising total of over ?350,000 from the biggest COINS 3 Peaks Challenge to date, is an unprecedented amount, and will really help make a difference to CARE International?s overseas development work. It is our intention to see that a proportion of these funds will go towards post Tsunami housing/reconstruction work. This feels an entirely appropriate focus for funds coming from the UK construction industry. This event has gone from strength to strength in its five year history, raising over ?1m for CARE?s work. On behalf of COINS, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all walkers, their support crew, their sponsors, and the construction industry for their contribution in taking part in not only such a memorable 2007 event, but all preceding COINS 3 Peaks Challenges.?

CARE Challenge Fundraising Manager, Michele Evans, added:

?We?re thrilled with the fantastic fundraising total on this year?s COINS 3 Peaks Challenge. These funds will go a long way to helping CARE International continue our much-needed work in the countries where we operate. We?d like to say a huge thanks to COINS for sponsoring this event, and everyone from the Construction Industry for taking part and contributing to its unprecedented success. We look forward to seeing many of you back on the mountains next year with CARE Challenge.?

In the meantime, please don?t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about CARE or our upcoming CARE Challenge Events.
