CARE IT 3 Peaks Challenge Post-Event Report

Teams from across the IT sector raised an impressive £105,000 for CARE International in the annual CARE IT 3 Peaks Challenge supported by Computer Weekly and ITSHOWCASElive last weekend.

Teams congregated at the foot of Ben Nevis on Saturday afternoon for the start of the challenge. After a series of briefings and team photos it was all guns blazing as participants began their ascent of Ben Nevis, which at 1334m is the UK’s highest mountain. The England football match proved to be a great motivation for some, and all the teams cleared the mountain by around 10.30 pm.

Next, it was off to the Lake District to scale all 978m of Scafell Pike. Despite a bit of rain and the unsociable hours, all teams completed the mountain with the final team crossing the finishing line by 12.30pm. Most teams agreed Scafell was the toughest part of the event, with wet conditions adding to the challenge of negotiating the boulders to the summit, but all teams made it down in good time. It was then off to sunny(ish) Wales to climb Snowdon, the final mountain of the challenge.

Despite the lack of sleep, and more than a few stiff legs and blisters, teams were up-beat and in high spirits upon arrival in Snowdonia. Everyone seemed keen to conquer the final mountain which stands at a mighty 1085m. Come late afternoon, Barclays’ elite team, Team Market, crossed the finish line to scoop first place with an impressive time of 19 hours and 50 minutes.  A steady stream of teams then followed them over the somewhat sodden finish line.

Afterwards all participants enjoyed a well earned hot meal, speeches and prize giving. Richard Greenfield accepted the prize for the highest fundraising on behalf of Barclays who raised an amazing £76,000 between them.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all walkers, support crew and volunteers for your efforts. We hope you feel proud to have completed such a grueling challenge and to have raised vital funds for CARE. Your participation is really appreciated and we enjoyed having so many up-beat, fun teams on board. Please also pass our thanks on to your loyal supporters – raising £105,000 is a real achievement and crucial to CARE and our beneficiaries. As mentioned by CARE’s Programme Director, John Plastow, at the awards dinner, CARE has had a huge presence in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that hit earlier this year, and our response is set to last for at least 5 years. With more than 1.3 million people left homeless a key focus for CARE was, and continues to be, shelter. CARE distributed emergency shelter kits, including family tents. Your combined efforts have covered the cost of purchasing and distributing tents to more than 1,500 displaced and devastated families - we simply would not be able to continue our work without supporters like you.

Thank you.
