CARE 3 Peaks Challenge 2007 post-event report

CARE 3 Peaks Challenge 9 - 10 June 2007

Our third major event of the 2007 season, the CARE 3 Peaks Challenge, took place on the weekend of 9-10 June, raising a fantastic ?75,000 for CARE International!

13 teams of intrepid professionals, recruited from a range of companies, pulled on their hiking boots and slapped on the sun cream in readiness for the gruelling challenge ahead of them: to scale the UK?s 3 highest peaks - Ben Nevis (1344m), Scafell Pike (978m) and Snowdon (1085m).

npower are ready to get going!
A beautiful morning greeted the teams at the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre, with support crews quickly bagging the shady areas of the car parks to start cooking up all manner of high energy snacks for the teams before they set off. There was no respite from the heat in the afternoon, and teams took advantage of the snow still lying on the summit by indulging in the odd snowball fight!

Teams then embarked on the long drive south towards the Lake District in readiness for their early Sunday morning ascent of mountain number two, Scafell Pike. A few hours stop for briefings at Southwaite Services saw team members scattered around the car park in sleeping bags, grabbing some sleep before the traditionally toughest part of the event - this being mainly due to the early start and damp conditions navigating the boulder field approaching the summit. However, once again, the teams were treated to blue skies and stunning views throughout the ascent ? something that seems to be fairly rare at Scafell Pike on CARE?s Challenge events to date!

This left just one mountain, Snowdon in Wales. Despite the skies turning a little threatening in the afternoon, only a couple of rain drops fell to cool things down and the forecast thunder storms never materialised. Soon teams were filling up their water bottles once again for the last push.

The finish line was soon packed with teams congratulating each other, and even a few tears were shed! Tears soon turned to beers as team members reached for the first cold lager of the evening, despite the clouds of midges that descended on the finish line towards the end of the day!

At the post-event reception, teams were praised for their outstanding fundraising achievements. npower were the overall top fundraisers with a fantastic total pledged of ?20,000. They were awarded with a commemorative framed picture of one of CARE?s overseas projects.

Very soon, blisters, sore knees and general fatigue were put aside as teams hit the dance floor until 3am!

2 teams completed the event in under 24 hours. Congratulations go to Xoserve Team 1 (Shelter) who completed the event in a fantastic 21 hours and 59 minutes. They were closely followed by Xoserve Team 2 (Business) who achieved an excellent 22 hours and 7 minutes, and npower Team 1 (Food) in 24 hours and 20 minutes.

CARE Challenge Fundraising Manager, Michele Evans, said:
