Team from Camden are set to challenge poverty

Four intrepid construction workers from Camden have teamed up for charity, and will take part in the CARE Construction Challenge on 2 July. The challenge, aimed at teams from across the construction industry, will raise funds for leading international aid and development agency CARE International.

The team, colleagues from construction firm RDG Engineering, will cover a marathon distance on foot, bike and canoe, in scenic Cannock Chase in Staffordshire. In additional to the physical challenge, mental agility will be tested in various mystery challenges.

Says Team Leader Rachel , “We are all aware of our fitness, and we thought it would be good to have something to strive for. We also thought it would be good to get involved in an industry related event. Before signing up, we weren’t really aware of CARE’s work. However, after looking into it in more detail, we felt that as professionals in the construction industry it is the perfect charity for us to get involved with. I think it’ll be a great feeling to know that we’ve achieved on behalf of such a good cause, but also a great sense of personal achievement.”

CARE’s WORK

CARE International helps 82 million people a year, in 87 countries, find routes out of poverty.

Sheltering vulnerable people and families is a crucial aspect of CARE’s work, which includes some of the most important and pioneering emergency shelter and reconstruction projects in the world. For example, funds raised could help pay for the deployment and assessment carried out by CARE’s emergency shelter advisers following emergencies such as earthquakes and floods; or erecting temporary shelter for families whose homes and lives have been devastated by war; or training communities in safer and longer-lasting construction techniques.

CARE Challenge Manager Neil Munro says, “The CARE Construction Challenge is one of CARE’s most important events in terms of fundraising. Over our series of 13 outdoor events in the 2011 CARE Challenge Series, we hope to raise £800,000, and we’re extremely grateful to the RDG Engineering team for taking part- we wish them the best of luck for the event.”

The team, Rachel Joshua, David Milward, Robert Gold, Loren Cooper, are looking for sponsorship for the challenge. CARE hopes to raise £75,000 through the CARE Construction Challenge and Rachel’s team hope to raise at least £3,000.  Anyone wishing to support them can visit www.justgiving.com/RDG-Engineering.
