The Challenge
The Challenge will take teams up 24 mountain peaks around the stunning Lake District, taking in mountains such as Scafell Pike, Hellvellyn and Great Dodd along the way. A far cry from the office: throughout the challenge teams will be amid some of the most breathtaking scenery in the UK. Afterwards, celebrations and awards will take place at a well-earned dinner and reception.
The CARE 24 Peaks Challenge is undoubtedly demanding - an opportunity to test yourself and your colleagues; an opportunity to achieve the ultimate.
About CARE
CARE works in around 70 countries helping 59 million of the world’s poorest people find a route out of poverty. CARE’s long-term programmes tackle the deep-seated causes of poverty and they are always among the first to respond with emergency relief when disaster strikes.
CARE is currently assisting the people of Haiti following the devastating earthquake on 12th January. This was the worst earthquake in the region for 200 hundred years, affecting 3.7 million people- a third of the population. An estimated 200,000 have died and 300,000 injured.
CARE distributed aid within days, including water purification tablets, meals, high-energy biscuits, mattresses, hygiene kits, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, jerry cans and kitchen sets, reaching an estimated 143,000 people.
CARE’s relief phase (present – April 2010) is focusing on food and emergency supplies, temporary shelter and access to clean drinking water. CARE’s longer-term response is set to last at least five years. Focus areas will include earthquake-resistant construction and preparedness, rehabilitation of water systems, and reconstruction of schools and health systems.
CARE Challenge Manager, Neil Munro, says “The 24 Peaks Challenge offers people the opportunity to turn their good will into concrete results, supporting CARE’s work not just in Haiti but in over 70 poor countries worldwide. It’s a chance to challenge yourself and challenge poverty.”
How to take part
The teams of between four and six walkers will be given the task of climbing 24 Peaks in the Lake District in 24 hours and raising a minimum of £6,000 to support CARE’s work.
