CARE’s London to Brighton Cycle Challenge will take place on 16 April 2011. We will once again be taking to our bikes and cycling all 91 km from London to Brighton, and we want you to join us.

The scenic route winds through idyllic country roads, avoiding main roads where possible. Cyclists will be separated into guide-led groups according to cycling abilities, ensuring this event is open to cycling enthusiasts and novices alike. events_table_londontobrighton.jpg

Cyclists will congregate in the morning to cycle out of Kingston and past the historic Hampton Court Palace. The route then winds through the Surrey countryside, undulates through the North Downs and into National Trust . After a picnic lunch provided en-route, you cycle into Dorking and on through the country lanes of Sussex, deep into the beautiful Leonard’s Forest.

Following a final refreshment stop, you will complete the last leg of the cycle ride over the South Downs and up the renowned Devil’s Dyke, which provides stunning views of the South Downs and Brighton. The day will culminate in a celebratory finish close to Brighton pier.

The minimum fundraising for this cycling event is £150 per participant (includes cost of participating, lunch and refreshments). Your £150 will help to fund some of CARE’s work in over 70 countries around the world.  L2Bjo180x135.jpg

Out in the field, bicycles are one of the most useful ways in which CARE staff reach those in remote areas. For example, Srey, a Community Care Volunteer in Cambodia, helps her community overcome the many health risks caused by poverty by sharing life-saving information about nutrition, malaria, HIV, and pregnancy with those in remote areas.

"My work helps the community a lot. I use my bike to do home visits, where I can counsel families about hygiene or show them simple things like how to use mosquito nets so they don't get sick." Srey, Cambodia.

We certainly have lots to offer in the charity cycling department. There are charity rides where you can cycle London to Brighton or you can even do a charity bike ride from London to Paris, if London to Brighton isn't far enough! We also have some charity walks and hikes. Later this year we have a sponsored walk that is 25 miles long in order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of CARE International's UK office. If activities outdoors and adventure weekends get your adrenalin pumping, then why not sign up for one of our mountain challenges? We have numerous charity challenges on mountains over the year from three peaks challenges to 24 peaks challenges - if you think you're up to it! For many of our charity fundraising events you can register as a teamleader or part of a team.
