Walk All Over Poverty

20 October 2013
CARE Walk All Over Poverty

A 10 km or 24 km walk in stunning Windsor.

What is Walk All Over Poverty?

What is Walk All Over Poverty? It is a stunning walk, taking place in Windsor and Eton in support of CARE International. You can complete a 10 km loop or continue on to complete a 24 km figure of eight loop of the Thames Path through Eton Windsor and Windsor Great Park, in an area known for its breath taking views and Royal connections.

When and where will it take place?

Walk All Over Poverty will atke place on Sunday 20 October. It starts and finishes in Alexandra Gardens, very close to Windsor Town Centre, and less than five minutes walk from either of the train stations in Windsor. The postcode for the area is SL4 1PJ.

How do I get there?

The easiest way to get to Windsor is by train.  Both Windsor Central and Riverside stations are within 5 minutes walk of the start, and have regular trains from Paddington via Slough or direct from Waterloo.  There are a number of car parks within walking distance too.

Can anyone take part?

Absolutely – this is our most inclusive challenge, with two routes to choose from.  Participants under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This event is open to both individuals and groups so please invite your friends, family or work colleagues to join you.

How fit do I need to be?

You will be walking for around 4-6 hours for the 24km route and around 2-3 hours for the 10km route. Try to complete some training walks before the challenge and ensure that your footwear is comfortable.  Please download our training guide to help you prepare – which includes tips about how to fit your training into your routine.

What time does it start?

Registration will begin at 9:30am. There will be an introduction from Geoffrey Dennis, CARE UK Chief Executive at 10:20 and participants will begin the walk from between 10:30 and 11.30. Please arrive at least half an hour earlier for registration and an event briefing.

How will I know where to go? And what happens if I get lost or injured along the way?

Both routes will be arrowed, and there will be marshals and qualified first aid representatives at the event.  Prior to walking you will also have an event briefing and you will be given a route map as well as details of what to do in the unlikely event of getting lost or injured.

Will there be toilets on route?

There will be toilets at the start and in several places along the route.

What will be provided for me on the day?

You’ll be given a map of the route and a CARE t-shirt to wear during your walk.

What do I need to bring with me?

We recommend you bring walking boots or trainers, a waterproof jacket and/or umbrella, a small rucksack with water and a packed lunch/snacks, and your mobile phone.

I can’t make it on 20 October - can I organise my own Walk All Over Poverty instead?

Of course! You are most welcome to organise your own walk for colleagues, friends or family.  Please let us know and we’ll give you all the advice you need to organise a safe enjoyable walk on a suitable date and in a convenient location for you.

How much do I need to fundraise?

We ask each walker to pay a £10 registration fee and then aim to fundraise an additional £90.

I’ve never fundraised before, where do I start?

A great way to start fundraising is to set up an online sponsorship page at www.justgiving.com/care which you can send to your colleagues, friends and family.  There are many ways to raise funds such as cake sales or donating the money you’ve saved by walking to work!  When you’ve signed up we’ll give you lots of ideas and will be on hand to support you.

Who is CARE International?

CARE International helps the poorest people in the world help themselves out of poverty and is always among the first to respond to humanitarian emergencies.  With a long-term presence in many of the world’s most vulnerable countries, CARE takes a comprehensive approach: helping people prepare for disasters; providing immediate assistance when a crisis hits; and helping people recover. Your support will help us to provide fast, effective relief to people in need as soon as an emergency hits. Whether it’s food, shelter, water or medical supplies that are needed, you will help to make a huge difference.
To find out more please visit our website www.careinternational.org.uk

Where will my funds go?

By walking, you will help CARE to provide emergency supplies. Just £10 – your registration fee for Walk All Over Poverty - could give a child like Sylvestre a month's supply of life saving high energy emergency food. Fundraise £100 and you could help to establish 3 community gardens so more than 15 families can grow food to eat and sell.

How do I sign up?

Registration will open soon. Register your interest here and we'll email you when it opens.

Celebrate International Women’s Day by making a real difference!

Women and girls in developing countries are disproportionately affected by poverty; often they're burdened with the back‐breaking task of collecting water, firewood or other basic necessities of life, often walking for hours each day. This leaves little time to attend school, access health services or earn money to support their families.

Walk in her shoes

The Challenge
We are challenging you to Walk In Her Shoes. The challenge is simple; choose any week in March 2012 and walk 10,000 steps per day for the whole week.

Walk in her shoesWhy Walk In Her Shoes?

CARE places special emphasis on working with women to create permanent social change.  This is because poverty can have a particularly devastating effect on women. Women are often denied basic human rights, access to opportunities and the tools that could help transform their lives.

Research also shows that women invest what they have in their families and communities. CARE works with women and girls to improve gender equality, improve access to reproductive and other health services, build and rehabilitate water/sanitation systems, improve access to education and support economic development, so that women can work their own way out of poverty and bring their families with them.

Windsor is to play host to a celebratory event, raising funds to assist people around the world in devastating emergencies.

CARE International will celebrate its 25th Anniversary with a 25 km Walkathon around Windsor’s picturesque countryside, on 2nd October 2010.
