Walking as a group

Written by Calista Holmes

GroupA group at the start of the challenge

The best way to enjoy Walk All Over Poverty is to walk with family, friends, or work colleagues.

Organise your own walk

If you live to far away or cannot make Walk All Over Poverty in Guildford on Saturday 6th October, then why not organise your own sponsored Walk All Over Poverty? It’s a fun way to help support CARE’s emergency work.

We’ll be on hand to help you organise the whole event, including:

•    Finding a suitable route
•    Fundraising
•    Publicity
•    Planning and logistics
•    Safety

Last year David from Suffolk decided to organise his own walk as he couldn’t make it on the day, but wanted to get active for CARE.

I used my own network of personal friends, many of whom walk regularly, plus work colleagues that I knew were interested in walking or joining in as a social event.  " A social event with a social conscience" is how I described it to them.  At the end we enjoyed great food that was prepared by good friends and shared with 40 people.

Download our guide to organising a fantastic walk, we hope it helps.  If you have any other questions, please call Ella Moffat on 020 7091 6111 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it – good luck!

How you will change lives

Written by Calista Holmes

Your support
By walking you will help to support people affected by disaster. Fighting poverty is never more difficult than in times of crisis.  Disasters like floods, drought and earthquakes tear lives apart. By walking you will help CARE to provide fast effective relief as soon as a disaster occurs. In an emergency a few hours can mean life or death. Whether it’s food, water or shelter that is needed, you will help to save lives.

Dije's Story dije and son from Niger

Dije's baby was born with odds stacked against him. He was born into a world of scarcity and suffering; into a country in the height of a food crisis. He was born with nothing. He was born only 2 months ago, in Niger.

Her baby will never meet three of his brothers. They died before he was born. He is now suffering the same symptoms that killed them: diarrhoea, difficulty swallowing, crying, malnutrition. Dije has seen it all before, “I don’t want to lose another child” she simply says.

Millions are at risk of hunger in Niger due to a poor harvest and soaring food prices. CARE is providing emergency food to families like Dije's, providing cash-for-work programmes so families can afford food and training nurses on the prevention of malnutrition. This is alongside our longer term work to make people less vulnerable to crises.

  • Your £100 could help CARE to feed ten babies affected by a disaster like a food crisis. It could provide high energy food to each of them for a month.

Tith's Story cambodiawoman

Last year unusually heavy monsoon rains caused devastation across South-East Asia, killing hundreds of people, including many children, in Cambodia and Vietnam.

Tith Meth, is a 69 year old widow from Cambodia whose rice paddy was inundated beyond salvation.  At the time Tith said “The floods completely destroyed so much.  Without our rice paddy, I now walk through the village every day, selling cakes I carry in my hat. I earn about 4,000 riel (65 pence) a day to give to my family, but it’s not enough. I don’t have any livestock; I don’t have any animals to support my family. Now, my family must support me. I am a burden.”

Thousands of families just like Tith’s received packages from CARE containing essential food items, blankets, mosquito nets, hygiene kits and water filters. CARE also worked with the communities on preventative health and water sanitation and health training. Tith estimated that the emergency rice and other foods she received from CARE would feed her family for six weeks. “I have not slept well since the floods came, but today I feel relief.” she said in reference to the day she received food.

CARE continues to support people to rebuild their lives by providing rice and vegetable seeds and helping to repair local infrastructure.  We are also helping communities to better prepare for such disasters

  • Your £100 could provide 8 families with an emergency safe water kit that inlcudes a water container, jerrican, bucket, bathing soap, laundry soap, as well as other essentail items to help families stay healthy

Walk FAQs

Written by James

What is Walk All Over Poverty?

It is a stunning walk, taking place in Guildford, Surrey in support of CARE International. You can complete 8 km loop or continue on to complete a 21 km figure of eight loop of the North Downs Way, in an area known for its outstanding natural beauty.
8km Route – This lovely walk takes you along the North Downs Way towards the Loseley Estate, before returning via a section of the Wey Canal.
21km Route – Once you’ve completed the first 8km, you’ll complete a second 13km loop by continuing along the North Downs Way.  You’ll pass St Martha’s Church, with lovely views of the North Downs, before returning along the Pilgrims Way to the start at Shalford Park.

When and where will it take place?

Walk All Over Poverty will take place on Saturday 6 October 2012. Both routes start and finish at Shalford Park, Guildford, GU4 8BL.

How do I get there?

The easiest way to get to Guildford is by train.  Guildford train station is 10 minutes’ walk from the start and there are regular trains from Waterloo, Clapham Junction, Woking, Sutton, Reading and Portsmouth.  There are a number of car parks within walking distance too.

Can anyone take part?

Absolutely – this is our most inclusive challenge, with two routes to choose from.  Participants under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This event is open to both individuals and groups so please invite your friends, family or work colleagues to join you.

How fit do I need to be?

You could be walking for around 4-6 hours for the 21km route and around 2-3 hours for the 8km route. Try to complete some training walks before the challenge and ensure that your footwear is comfortable.

What time does it start?

Registration for both routes will open from 9:00am. There will be an official welcome at 10:20am and participants will begin the walk from 10:30am.

How will I know where to go? And what happens if I get lost or injured along the way?

Both routes will be arrowed, and there will be marshals and qualified first aid representatives at the event.  Prior to walking you will also have an event briefing and you will be given a route map as well as details of what to do in the unlikely event of getting lost or injured.

Will there be toilets on route?

There will be toilets at the start and in several places along the route.

What will be provided for me on the day?

You’ll be given a map of the route and a CARE t-shirt to wear during your walk.

What do I need to bring with me?

We recommend you bring walking boots or trainers, a waterproof jacket and/or umbrella, a small rucksack with water and a packed lunch/snacks, and your mobile phone.

I can’t make it to Guildford on 6 October - can I organise my own Walk All Over Poverty Instead?

Of course! You are most welcome to organise your own walk for colleagues, friends or family.  Please let us know and we’ll give you all the advice you need to organise a safe enjoyable walk on a suitable date and in a convenient location for you.

How much do I need to fundraise?

We ask for a minimum donation of £25 per person and encourage each participant to reach or exceed a fundraising target of £100.  Participants under the age of 18 don’t have a set fundraising target and are welcome to fundraise to cover their minimum donation of £25.

I’ve never fundraised before, where do I start?

A great way to start fundraising is to set up an online sponsorship page at www.justgiving.com/care which you can send to your colleagues, friends and family.  There are many ways to raise funds such as cake sales or donating the money you’ve saved by walking to work!  When you’ve signed up we’ll give you lots of ideas and will be on hand to support you.

Who is CARE International?

CARE International helps the poorest people in the world help themselves out of poverty and is always among the first to respond to humanitarian emergencies.  With a long-term presence in many of the world’s most vulnerable countries, CARE takes a comprehensive approach: helping people prepare for disasters; providing immediate assistance when a crisis hits; and helping people recover. Your support will help us to provide fast, effective relief to people in need as soon as an emergency hits. Whether it’s food, shelter, water or medical supplies that are needed, you will help to make a huge difference.
To find out more please visit our website www.careinternational.org.uk

Where will my funds go?

You will be helping people living in extreme poverty like Hasana, a farmer from Niger, who has been affected by the drought and food crisis in West Africa.  Hasana and her husband are subsistence farmers from Niger. Chronic lack of rain caused their crops to fail, leaving them with hardly anything to eat.  Hasana did what she could to feed her 10 month old daughter Farida, but she was so malnourished herself so she was unable to breastfeed. “I have no milk for her,” she told us. “When she cries I give her millet mixed with water and milk, but it doesn’t have the nourishment she needs. ”In a last, desperate effort to seek treatment for her baby daughter, Farida’s mother carried her many miles in the searing heat to the nearest health clinic, where thanks to people like you, CARE International had set up a special feeding programme for malnourished children.  Baby Farida was immediately given a high-protein, high-energy paste which saved her life.  Gradually she put on weight and is now a lively and happy child.  Just £15 could buy enough high energy food to treat a child like Farida for 3 weeks.

How do I sign up?

Walk all over poverty test

Written by Calista Holmes

Walk All Over Poverty and help us to be amongst the first to respond when emergencies strike.

Why?

When natural disasters or humanitarian emergencies occur, appealing to the general public for funds can lose crucial time. By ‘walking all over poverty’, you will support CARE’s work, enabling us to provide fast, effective relief to people in need as soon as emergencies hit.

The Challenge

You can walk 10 km or choose to complete the full 25 km route. We ask for a minimum donation of £25 per person and encourage each participant to reach or exceed a fundraising target of £100.

In emergency situations, a few hours can mean the difference between life and death, and your funds will save lives. Whether it’s food, water, blankets, hygiene kits, emergency shelter or medical supplies that are needed, we’ll be there to help.

Last year CARE reached more than 10 million people in emergency situations. This included helping people whose lives were torn apart by the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, as well as those affected by the floods that devastated Pakistan.

Walk In Her Shoes
Thank you to everyone who made this year’s campaign a huge success! If you are interested in being part of the March 2013 campaign, then please register your interest here and we will contact you with more information closer to the time.

Celebrate International Women’s Day by making a real difference!

Women and girls in developing countries are disproportionately affected by poverty; often they're burdened with the back‐breaking task of collecting water, firewood or other basic necessities of life, often walking for hours each day. This leaves little time to attend school, access health services or earn money to support their families.

Walk in her shoes

The Challenge
We are challenging you to Walk In Her Shoes. The challenge is simple; choose any week in March 2012 and walk 10,000 steps per day for the whole week.

Walk in her shoesWhy Walk In Her Shoes?

CARE places special emphasis on working with women to create permanent social change.  This is because poverty can have a particularly devastating effect on women. Women are often denied basic human rights, access to opportunities and the tools that could help transform their lives.

Research also shows that women invest what they have in their families and communities. CARE works with women and girls to improve gender equality, improve access to reproductive and other health services, build and rehabilitate water/sanitation systems, improve access to education and support economic development, so that women can work their own way out of poverty and bring their families with them.
